Fuel for Learning: Our Winter Menu Is Here at Kids Academy

What children eat during the day has a direct impact on how well they learn. At Kids Academy, we've built our 2026 Winter Menu around exactly that principle - warm, nourishing meals that give children the energy and nutrients they need to focus, explore, and thrive through every cooler-month session.

Food That Supports How Children Learn

The connection between nutrition and learning is well established. Iron supports cognitive development and concentration. Complex carbohydrates provide steady energy that keeps children engaged rather than flagging mid-morning. Protein fuels the growth and repair that children's bodies are constantly undergoing. Healthy fats support brain development at every stage.

In winter, this matters even more. Children burn more energy staying warm, immune systems are working harder, and the instinct to reach for comfort food can mean nutritional variety narrows at home. At Kids Academy, our winter menu is designed to fill that gap, offering children a broad, balanced diet across every week of the season, prepared fresh onsite at each centre each day.

Developed With Dietitian Expertise

Our 2026 Winter Menu has been developed in collaboration with The Biting Truth, a team of Accredited Practising Dietitians with deep experience in early childhood nutrition, and our national food partner Woolworths at Work. The menu meets all relevant nutritional guidelines for children aged two to five, including the Australian Dietary Guidelines, ACECQA requirements, and Munch and Move guidelines.

Across a four-week rotation, children are exposed to a broad range of cuisines, flavours, textures, and ingredients, building food confidence alongside the habits that support lifelong healthy eating.

What's on the Menu

Here's a look at some of the meals fuelling our learners this winter:

  • Vietnamese Beef and Bean Stew with white rice - warming and iron-rich, with lemongrass, five spice, and cannellini beans
  • Mexican Cheesy Beef and Rice Casserole - protein-packed with a three-bean vegetarian option
  • Minestrone Soup with Bread Soldiers - vegetable-forward and fibre-rich, with kidney beans and risoni
  • Garlic Chicken Veggie Stir Fry with Brown Rice - lean protein with capsicum, green beans, and baby corn
  • Italian Pork Mince and Veggie Pasta Bake - a hearty bake with lentils, zucchini, and macaroni

Morning and afternoon teas keep energy steady across the day. Children enjoy options like Vegemite Crumpets with Cheese and Fruit, and Easy Oaty Slice with Crunchy Veggies - snacks that are genuinely nourishing rather than just filling.

Every lunch comes with a balanced vegetarian alternative, and Halal options are available. Speak with your Centre Manager for details.

Try It at Home: Mexican Cheesy Bean and Rice Casserole

One of our most popular winter lunches works just as well on the dinner table at home. This family-friendly casserole is hearty, budget-friendly, and full of the nutrients growing children need.

Serves: 4-6

Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients

  • 500g beef mince (or use a 400g tin of Mexican-style three-bean mix for a vegetarian version)
  • 1 brown onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 large carrot, diced
  • 1 red capsicum, diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 cup frozen corn
  • 1 cup long grain rice, rinsed
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 500ml vegetable stock (low sodium)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon ground coriander
  • ½ cup grated tasty cheese
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Method

  1. Heat olive oil in a large, deep frying pan or casserole dish over medium-high heat. Add onion and cook for 3 minutes until softened. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  2. Add mince (or beans) and cook, breaking up with a spoon, until browned.
  3. Stir in carrot, capsicum, tomato paste, paprika, cumin, and coriander. Cook for 2 minutes.
  4. Add rice and vegetable stock. Stir well, bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 20–25 minutes until rice is cooked and liquid is absorbed.
  5. Stir through peas and corn in the last 5 minutes of cooking.
  6. Top with grated cheese, cover for 2 minutes to melt, then serve.

Tip: Leftovers keep well in the fridge for two days - reheat with a splash of water to loosen.

A Menu That Works With Your Family

Our centre teams consult with families throughout the season, and up to 20% of the menu can be thoughtfully swapped to suit local preferences and cultural needs, with nutritional balance maintained across any changes. Your child's full seasonal menu is displayed at your centre.

Speak with your Centre Manager if you'd like to discuss your child's individual food needs, dietary requirements, or share feedback on what they're enjoying.
