Unlocking Curiosity: How Our Youngest Learners Explore the Hidden Language of the World

Every day, children at Kids Academy are discovering more than letters and numbers, they’re learning how the world works, one question at a time.

During Science Week 2025 (9-17 August), we’re inviting children and families to explore this year’s national theme:

Decoding the Universe: Exploring the Unknown with Nature’s Hidden Language

While that might sound advanced, the idea behind the theme is beautifully simple, encouraging children to notice patterns, signals, rhythms, and systems that make up the world around them.

It’s something our educators support every day, through hands-on learning, guided exploration, and meaningful conversations, in the nursery, the toddler room, and our School Readiness classrooms.

The Foundations of Scientific Thinking Begin Early

At Kids Academy, we believe that science is not just a subject, it’s a mindset. One that starts long before children enter primary school.

From their very first days with us, children are encouraged to:

  • Observe and explore
  • Make predictions and test ideas
  • Recognise patterns in nature and routine
  • Solve problems through trial and error

For toddlers, this might mean:

  • Pouring water into different-sized containers
  • Sorting shells by colour or shape
  • Noticing how the sun moves across the playground

For our kindy and preschool learners, it becomes:

  • Asking questions about weather, animals, or shadows
  • Investigating what floats or sinks, and why
  • Exploring systems like plant growth, time, or sound

These aren’t just play moments, they’re the building blocks of scientific understanding.

The Kids Academy Approach to Early STEM

Our Lifelong Learning Curriculum includes the Big Thinkers STEM program, designed to give children the tools to explore and investigate their world in age-appropriate, engaging ways.

Science is woven throughout the day, through sensory play, project-based learning, literacy and numeracy experiences, and even mealtimes and outdoor play.

With thoughtful guidance from our educators, children build confidence in their ability to ask questions, think critically, and work collaboratively.

What Science Week Looks Like in Our Centres

This week, your child may:

  • Use a magnifying glass to inspect natural patterns in leaves and bark
  • Rescue small toys frozen in ice using warm water droppers
  • Predict which items will sink or float, and then test them
  • Sort nature objects by colour, shape, or texture
  • Trace shadows and explore how they shift throughout the day

Educators will support these experiences with open-ended questions and rich language, helping children connect what they observe to how the world works.

Keep an eye on Storypark to see what your child explores during the week!

Continue the Curiosity at Home

Science Week is also a great time to slow down and enjoy a few simple activities at home that spark discussion and wonder.

1. Shadow Detectives (Ages 2-5)

Use a torch or go outside in the sun. Notice your child’s shadow as they move, jump, or wave. Can you trace it? Does it change later in the day?

2. Natural Pattern Hunt (All Ages)

On a walk, collect leaves, feathers or stones. Look closely at the lines, shapes or colours - what patterns do you see?

3. Sound Guessing Game (Ages 1-5)

Hide everyday items (keys, rice in a jar, a squeaky toy) and play the sounds. Ask: What do you think that sound is?

These kinds of activities gently introduce children to cause and effect, signals, and prediction, the same thinking scientists use every day.

Why It Matters

When we talk about school readiness, we’re not just preparing children to sit in a classroom.
We’re helping them become curious, confident thinkers, the kind who feel safe to ask questions and excited to find the answers.

That starts here, with you, and with us.
