Pumpkin, Lentil and Pasta Soup Recipe: A Kids Academy Family Favourite

At Kids Academy Early Learning, we’re proud to provide children with high-quality care and education - and that extends to the meals we offer every day. Nutritious food plays a vital role in supporting early development, which is why our menus are designed to nourish growing bodies and minds during the most important years of life.

This Pumpkin, Lentil and Pasta Soup is one of our most popular seasonal dishes. It’s made with wholesome ingredients, packed with nutrients, and mild enough for little taste buds - while being flavourful and satisfying for the whole family.

Why This Soup Supports Healthy Growth

Designed with children under five in mind, this recipe combines fibre-rich ingredients and seasonal produce to support development and wellbeing:

  • Pumpkin is a rich source of vitamin A and beta-carotene, which help support vision and a strong immune system.
  • Lentils provide plant-based protein, iron, and fibre, helping children stay energised and satisfied throughout the day.
  • Evaporated milk gives the soup a creamy texture and adds essential calcium for strong bones and teeth.
  • Wholemeal pasta delivers long-lasting energy and supports healthy digestion thanks to its high fibre content.

This recipe is also budget-friendly, easy to freeze, and a great way to introduce new flavours and textures to young children.

Pumpkin, Lentil and Pasta Soup

Serves: 4–6
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 40 minutes

Ingredients

Main Ingredients:

  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 700g pumpkin, peeled and cubed
  • 2½ cups canned lentils, drained and rinsed
  • 130 mL reduced-fat evaporated milk
  • 2 cups small wholemeal pasta (such as shells, risoni, or macaroni)
  • 700 mL liquid vegetable stock
  • A little olive oil for cooking

Optional Flavour Boosters:

  • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped
  • A pinch of mild curry powder, cumin, or paprika
  • A teaspoon of dried herbs like thyme or Italian seasoning
  • A squeeze of lemon juice before serving
  • A swirl of natural Greek yoghurt or a sprinkle of cheese
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste

Method

  1. Peel and cube the pumpkin, and dice the onion.
  2. In a large saucepan, heat a little oil and cook the onion (and garlic, if using) until soft and fragrant. Add any herbs or spices here.
  3. Add the pumpkin and just enough water to cover. Pour in the vegetable stock. Bring to the boil, then reduce heat and simmer until the pumpkin is soft.
  4. Add half the lentils and blend until smooth using a stick blender. Add more water if needed to reach a soupy consistency.
  5. Return to the boil and stir in the pasta. Simmer gently until cooked through.
  6. Stir in the remaining lentils and evaporated milk. Heat through gently and season to taste.

Tips for Families

  • Let your child choose their favourite pasta shape - it’s a fun way to involve them in mealtimes.
  • Great for freezing in individual portions for quick and healthy lunches or dinners.
  • Add a sprinkle of cheese or serve with toast for a little extra comfort.
