Your toddler’s world is full of big emotions, new discoveries - and so many words just waiting to be spoken. From morning cuddles to the drive to daycare, every little chat helps build their confidence, curiosity, and communication skills.
At Kids Academy Early Learning, we know that language development isn’t something you need to schedule. It happens in the most ordinary moments of your day - packing snacks, spotting birds in the backyard, or waiting at the lights. You’re already doing more than you think.
Here’s how to make those everyday chats even more meaningful - and how we support your toddler’s language journey using a research-backed approach designed for real life.
What Is the Abecedarian 3a Approach?
As part of our Lifelong Learning Curriculum, the Abecedarian 3a approach is at the heart of how we nurture communication skills in our toddler rooms.
It focuses on three powerful (and very practical) strategies:
-
Language Priority - weaving conversation into every moment of the day
-
Conversational Reading - reading with children, not just to them
-
Learning Games - using play and routine to encourage back-and-forth talk
This method is backed by decades of research - and it works. Best of all, it doesn’t require any special prep or tools. Just a little more awareness and a lot of connection.
Easy Ways to Boost Language Through Everyday Life
Busy parents - we see you. Between daycare drop-offs, work calls, dinner prep, and everything in between, there’s not always time to stop and plan. The good news? You don’t have to. These ideas slide right into your daily rhythm.
Talk Through What You’re Doing
Whether you’re folding clothes or prepping lunch, narrate out loud:
"We’re slicing the apple - so crunchy and sweet! Let’s count the pieces together."
Pause and Let Them Respond
Give your toddler a moment to answer, even if it’s with a giggle or a look. That little pause shows them their voice matters - and encourages them to keep trying.
Expand Their Words
When your child says “truck,” you might say:
"Yes, a big red truck! It’s going beep beep. Where do you think it’s going?"
This builds vocabulary and models sentence structure.
Follow Their Curiosity
Notice what catches their attention:
"You spotted the dog! Look at its fluffy ears. Can you hear it bark?"
Turn Reading Into a Conversation
At Kids Academy, our educators practise Conversational Reading - asking questions, pointing at pictures, and inviting children to engage.
Try: "What do you think happens next?" or "Can you find the rainbow?"
What This Looks Like at Kids Academy
From Killara to Mickleham, Craigieburn to Redbank Plains, our toddler rooms are filled with warm voices, eye-level interactions, and rich conversations. Our educators take time to connect - not just teach - because every child deserves to feel heard.
Using the Abecedarian 3a approach, we turn daily routines into learning moments. Nappy changes, snack time, water play, cuddles after big feelings - it’s all part of your child’s communication journey.
