Getting your toddler to brush their teeth, wash their hands, or hop into the bath can feel like a mission - especially after a big day. But you’re not alone.
At Kids Academy Early Learning, we understand that young children don’t just learn hygiene routines overnight. It takes time, consistency, and a whole lot of patience - and that’s okay.
Whether your little one is just starting to explore these routines or learning to become more independent, here are some real-world, parent-approved ways to help build healthy habits at home.
Tooth Brushing Without the Fuss
Tooth brushing can be tricky. It’s new, it can feel strange, and it’s easy for children to resist - especially when they’re tired. But with a few simple tricks, it can become something they look forward to.
Try this:
-
Brush together in front of the mirror - kids love copying grown-ups.
-
Let your child choose their own toothbrush and toothpaste.
-
Sing a two-minute song (like “Brush Your Teeth” by The Wiggles) while brushing.
Top tip: The Australian Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day for two minutes from the time your child’s first tooth appears. At Kids Academy, our educators build awareness of oral hygiene through fun group activities, role play and books.
For growing independence:
Let your child start brushing “all by themselves,” then gently help finish the job. Offering small choices - like which toothbrush to use or who brushes first - can reduce power struggles and encourage ownership.
Make Handwashing Stick
Handwashing is one of the simplest ways to protect your child’s health - but remembering to do it (and doing it properly!) takes practice.
Encourage it at home by:
-
Using a step stool so they can reach the tap themselves.
-
Choosing fun foaming soap or colourful timers.
-
Singing “Happy Birthday” twice while they scrub to keep it playful.
These are the same strategies we use at Kids Academy every day - before meals, after outdoor play, and during toilet training - so children naturally build confidence and independence over time.
Keep Bath Time Calm and Consistent
Some children love a soak. Others run at the sight of shampoo. But even on the tough nights, bath time can be a moment of connection, calm and learning.
Tips to try:
-
Offer simple toys like cups, ducks or a washcloth for pretend play.
-
Let your child wash a doll or action figure first, then themselves.
-
Stick to a routine: bath, book, bed. Predictability helps children feel safe.
Have more than one child?
Bathing siblings together can save time and help build positive connections. Older children often enjoy showing their younger sibling how to wash - a great way to reinforce habits for both.
What If Your Child Is...
-
Under 2? Start small. Let them explore water, hold a toothbrush, and mimic your actions. Keep it sensory and positive.
-
Ages 2–3? Encourage simple responsibilities like rubbing in soap or picking their towel. These “little jobs” feel big to them!
-
Ages 4–5? Reinforce independence with praise and trust. You might try a visual routine chart or “hygiene helper” system that celebrates success.
Every child is different. What works one day may not work the next - and that’s completely normal.
On the Hard Days
Let’s be real - some days go smoothly, others feel like chaos. What matters is that your child feels safe, supported, and loved. Progress is made in the little moments - even when things don’t go exactly to plan.
At Kids Academy, our educators gently guide children through self-care routines every day. From handwashing to learning how to care for their bodies, we’re here to help your child grow into a capable, confident learner.
And if you're ever unsure, or looking for new ideas, just ask us - we’re always here to support both children and parents.
